Switzerland

Switzerland touches Germany, France, Austria, and Italy and combines all of the languages to make a very beautiful and unique culture. When people think of Switzerland, they often think of St. Bernard dogs, the Alps, and Heidi who lived in the mountains with her grandfather in the famous story and movie. They also think of delicately constructed watches and Swiss Army knives-as well as peace. Because its land-locked location, it promoted peace and neutrality while being the banker for many of the European nations.

The Swiss are very proper, mannerly people who reflect the cultural diversity of the neighboring countries. It is a costly country to visit but it has some excellent skiing, great hiking to incredible vistas, and fabulous cheeses-of course, fondue. Visitors to Switzerland can find varieties of lodging from mountain chalets, elegant resorts, great chocolate and city hotels.

Although Geneva is a perfectly modern city, it has a beautiful old town to visit with incredible architecture and museums only a stone's throw from the Alps. Geneva is the home of the International Red Cross. Visitors to Zurich can enjoy the sites of the lakeside city that is famous for its Swiss watches and chocolates.

A clever way to enter Switzerland is by circumnavigating Lake Constance either by driving or bicycling from Germany or Austria.

Visitors can drive to Switzerland from any of its neighboring countries, but it is more fun to sit back in a comfortable train seat and watch the beautiful mountain vistas rather than clutching the steering wheel on the windy mountain roads. Travelers from Frankfurt am Main in Germany can take the train to any of the beautiful mountain towns in Switzerland. Others might prefer to fly to Zurich or Geneva.
