Sweden

Sweden, the largest Scandinavian country, is squeezed between Finland and Norway with Denmark to its south. It is a country with rich farming as well as having many beautiful lakes, interesting islands, and thick forests. In the north, there are the Sámi people of Lapland which crosses the borders of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. When thinking of Lapland, travelers and adventures often think of herds of reindeer roaming in a fragile, wilderness environment. Some refer to Lapland as the "Land of the Midnight Sun."

Food lovers are drawn to Sweden for smorgasbords which originated there. Interesting Swedish culinary traditions include varieties of open face sandwiches with vegetable and seafood toppings on very thinly-sliced breads and fish served hot or cold in various sauces. Aquavit is a Swedish alcoholic beverage distilled from grain or potatoes with spices and herbs for added flavor.

Like the other Scandinavian countries, Sweden is internationally known for the designs of its famous Swedish crystal, silver, ceramics, glassware, and stainless steel as well as its home furnishing. Therefore, all visitors to Sweden must visit the shops, galleries, and museums to see the beautiful arts and crafts of the country.

Outdoor adventurers like to visit Sweden in all seasons to enjoy hiking, kayaking along the coast, and cross-country skiing. Surprisingly, in the summer, visitors can find some great beaches in the south where the climate is sunny and warm.

Stockholm, Sweden's capital city, is often called the "city of islands" which stands between the Baltic Sea and an inland lake. The cityscape of Stockholm shows the rich Swedish sense of design through its architecture, sculptures, and parks. It even boasts beautiful subway art, great restaurants, and excellent lodging and resorts. Besides walking around Stockholm, visitors should plan a boat trip to really get the best view of the city and its islands. Tourists should plan on wandering around the Old Town and dining at an outdoor café. During the summer, Stockholm hosts a jazz festival for visitors who enjoy varieties of music.

Other places to visit:
  1. Include the other Scandinavian countries on any visit to Sweden.
  2. Visit the countries that touch the Baltic Sea, such as Russia, Estonia, and Latvia.
