Meditteranean Coastline

From Spain to Turkey, the coastline of Mediterranean Sea offers vacationers plenty of sun, lots of interesting beaches, fabulous regional cuisines, and cultures that are steeped in history. Vacationers can visit one country at a time or take a season to sample Spain, France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, and Turkey. Along the way, there are islands to explore like the Balderas, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and Crete, just to mention a few as well as seas like the Adriatic and Aegean to sail.

If vacationers want a sampling of countries, they can start in Barcelona, Spain which hosted the 1992 Olympic Games and has a 2,000 year history with an interesting port, beautiful architecture of its cathedral, which is like a fortress, and museums. Visitors to Barcelona love the paella, which is a favorite Spanish dish of seafood and rice.

In France, visitors can sample the beautiful and historic resort areas and cities of the Cote d'Azur that include St. Tropez, Cap d'Antibes, Antibes, Cannes, Nice, and Monaco in the heart of the French Riviera. In addition to enjoying the ambiance of these incredible coastal cities and sighting some of the internationally famous celebrities who vacation in the region, visitors should leave the coast an venture a few kilometers inland to explore some of the beautiful villages like Valbonne, Opio, or Biot and the foothills of the Alpes Maritimes.

San Remo is the western most city along the Italian Mediterranean coastline and is a good starting point for exploring the great towns of Italy like Rome, Florence, or Naples before going to Venice on the Adriatic Sea. Historians, religious scholars, and lovers of design and fashion often are drawn to these cities which have something for everyone. The food in Italy is wonderful because it varies by region, but it always includes wonderful cheeses, tomatoes, olives, and various types of sausages. Like the rest of southern Europe, bicyclists enjoy racing through the hills and tiny villages or touring casually for vacation adventures.

After leaving Venice and exploring its canals and historic buildings, Mediterranean visitors should stop along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea to sample the beauty of the unspoiled and rugged coasts before going on to Greece.

In Greece, which hosted the last summer Olympics, visitors can listen to the beautiful music, travel to unspoiled islands, and study the historic monuments in Athens. The sun and beaches of Greece are incomparable. Because Greece is often thought to be the cradle of western knowledge, visitors can follow the paths of many ancient scholars.

Beyond Greece is Turkey where the cultures of the east and west meet on the Aegean Sea. There are coastal resorts and villages along the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas to visit, but to get a true picture of Turkey; visitors must travel inland to Ankara.

Visitors to the Mediterranean Sea coastal countries can cruise from country to country and island to island. However, there are trains that are readily available with schedules that are easy to follow if vacationers prefer to stay on land. Those vacationers, who prefer to tour by automobile, can drive from Spain to Italy with no problems. However, they need to be prepared for the fast European drivers on the expressways as well as on the narrow winding rural roadways. In some areas, villages are inaccessible by car. Additionally, driving in urban areas can be somewhat treacherous because of the traffic congestion on the narrow streets.

Because the northern Mediterranean coastline is a very popular vacation destination, some resorts and hotels require reservations a year in advance, especially if vacation plans include visits in July and August.
