Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein is a tiny mountainous, principality squeezed between
Austria and
Switzerland. Although it is known as a tax haven, Liechtenstein is a really winter sports haven. Scholl Vaduz is a castle and home of the Princes of
Liechtenstein and is perched on the top of a mountain from which it overlooks the capital.
Travelers to
Liechtenstein also go there for the stamps. It might be a tiny country, but it is a stamp collector's dream. It ranks as the fourth smallest country in Europe after
Vatican City,
Monaco, and
San Marino; however, it has a rather high standard of living.
Visitors to
Liechtenstein must visit the capital city to see the
Heimatmuseum and
Triesenberg, which has great views of the Upper
Rhine River Valley. Lodging in the communities and at the winter sports resort is interesting.
The country, where the official language is German, is divided into eleven communities, many are single towns:
Although
Liechtenstein is landlocked and surrounded by other landlocked countries, it has the beautiful
Rhine River in its western region, which is part of the
Upper Rhine Valley within the European Alps.
Travelers to
Liechtenstein can arrive by rail from
Switzerland or
Austria. The trains stop in four cities in Liechtenstein. There is a network of paved roads throughout the country, and a bus system, Liechtenstein Bus, which is a subsidiary of the
Swiss Postbus system, connects Switzerland with
Liechtenstein.
Because of its location and tiny size,
Liechtenstein has a culture that has been relatively undisturbed by the European events. It was a remote province of Rome. In 1806, it gained its independence from the
Holy Roman Empire that disintegrated after Napoleon's invasion and March across Europe. Because of the interesting
history, visitors to
Liechtenstein can find interesting
architecture, castles, and other historic artifacts.
