Greece

Greece is the historic peninsula and 166 inhabited islands separating the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Visitors to Greece can access it by cruise ships, trains, or planes flying into its capital Athens. Many think of Greece as the cradle of western culture and thought.

Greece, which is generally arid and mountainous with pine and eucalyptus trees, has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its hills and mountainsides have wonderful wildflowers in the spring; however, they provide great hiking trails year-round. Bicyclists, looking for a challenge, like biking in Greece. Greece is the place for sailing, scuba diving, and boating vacations. Some people sail or yacht from island to island during the summer months. Island hopping is a wonderful way to vacation. In addition to the great beaches for beachcombing and sun worshiping, the islands have wonderful, quaint villages. There are historic Franco castles dating back to the Crusades on some of the islands.

All visitors to Greece have to visit the classic cultural remains like the Acropolis in the historic center of Athens. Visiting the Acropolis is something to do during the day and evening—it is spectacular under the evening floodlights. Besides the rich historic relics and artifacts found in Athens, there also is a modern culture of festivals and theaters, including the Hellenic Festival which runs from June through September and features classical Greek drama. Greece, particularly, Athens has many museums. In addition to visiting the ancient sites, visitors should explore the site of the 2004 Olympics.

Greek food is wonderful, especially when part of a Greek celebration with music and dancing. The Greek cuisine features honey and pistachios in its rich pastries and tomatoes, olives, and feta cheese in its salads. Food lovers believe that Greek olives and olive oil are the best in the Mediterranean region. Many tourists find the food at the neighborhood or local tavernas as good as the larger restaurants. The tavernas serve authentic local food. Owners of the tavernas allow their customers to visit their kitchens to select their favorite dishes.

In Athens and the towns throughout Greece, visitors can purchase traditional Greek products like woolen and leather goods, ceramics, tapestries, and felt slippers.

Greece can be a vacation destination or part of a larger Mediterranean tour. Many people fall in love with Greece and return over and over again. Because Greece is so popular because it has such great weather and beaches, it is now time to make summer reservations.
