Finland

Northern Michigan has a Finnish heritage, and Finland reminds its visitors of northern Michigan with thick green forests and pristine inland lakes. In fact, Finland is often called the "land of forests and lakes." Northern Finland, which includes a region north of the Arctic Circle, contains the wilderness of Lapland where visitors can learn about the culture of the Sámi people who live in that cold, sparsely populated area.

Eco-tourists love Finland because there is white-water rafting, kayaking, hiking, and mountain climbing. Additionally, ferries connect the Finland's many islands for more hiking and exploring around the rugged coastline and beaches. In the winter, outdoor adventurers can enjoy cross-country skiing in many areas throughout Finland.

Many of the rural roads are dirt tracks, but the national railroad connects most of the cities throughout Finland, except in the north. Surprisingly, the weather is milder that most visitors would expect because its climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream.

Helsinki, the capital city of Finland, is often called the cultural capital of Europe. Additionally, Helsinki has fine restaurants, art museums, theaters, and hotels with saunas (most hotels in Finland have saunas). Visitors to Helsinki find it breathtaking and often prefer to approach it from the sea. The city of Helsinki has remarkable architecture and celebrates art and culture. Throughout Finland, and especially in Helsinki, artisans set the standard for the rest of the world, and visitors can fine beautiful weavings, colorful fabrics, creative pottery, unusual crystal, and decorative china. The food in Helsinki reflects the Finnish love of the sea with local, serving local specialties like salmon soup.

Finland also is a family-friendly country. Many of its communities have outdoor recreation facilities, art projects, and theaters children.

Other travel ideas:
  1. Wander through Scandinavia after visiting Finland.
  2. Because Finland is wedged between Sweden and Russia, travelers might want to go to Russia after a Scandinavian tour.
